Invention of the hydraulophone, a water-based musical instrument

Hydraulophones are musical instruments that use water to produce acoustic sound, in which the fingers of the musician are in physical contact with the water.

Hi – Here’s a short sampling of a few of the simple home made instruments whose construction is detailed on my webpage at DennisHavlena.com This video was made in my back yard, on the spur of the moment and is not intended to be fancy music — just to show some of the instruments, which include — in order – 3 string cookie-tin banjo with weed- whip line strings. Tune is “the Cuckoo”. – “Tambiro” made from a new (never-been-filled) 20 Lb. propane tank. Building this instrument gave me the idea for inventing my propane tank “hank drum” (a humble alternative to the hang drum) – My “Fiddle-Gurdy” combination fiddle & Hurdy Gurdy. Much fun! I apologize for the squeak here and there — I was impatient to get things on Youtube. Tune is an old French Canadian Voyageur’s melody, “En Roullant Ma Boulle”. Inspiration from Yuichi Onoue’s “Kaisatsuko”. – My 4-string, full sized wash-tub bass. Holds it’s own nicely in a band situation. – Simple Hardanger fiddle conversion. 4 strings playing & 4 strings sympathetic that run through a tunnel carved into the underside of the fingerboard. Tunes are “Road to Boston” (aka “Col. Greene’s March”) and “Over the Waterfall”. – Low D Tin-Whistle made from a shower-curtain rod for a few dollars. Tune is made up on the spot (& it sounds it!). – Octave Mandolin (aka bozouki, cittern) converted from an old guitar. Tune is the “Boys of Bluehill” hornpipe. PS: I just put another short video on YouTube of my PVC tubing instrument that plays like a hang

  1. Great, just what we need, more ways to waste water.

Apart from that, it’s very clever.

  7. If the water’s not heated, it’s a little cold to play in winter: see Ls1eu7Ry8sE

We also sometimes heat the water, e.g. we played in minus 20 degres C weather in February 2007, and the mayor was there and also played: see wearcam

  9. From a player’s perspective, how it works is very simple: you just put your fingers into the mouths of the instrument. The water comes out the mouths easier than going to the sounder. Blocking the jet in the middle produces the clearest brightest sound, and blocking the hole on the edge makes a more dull sound.

As for hydraulophone sound-production mechanisms, there’s lots of articles; maybe start with Wikipedia and then branch out into some of the more detailed peer-reviewed publications.

  12. This is perfect for people who can’t be bothered to clean their instruments. :-)

  13. dumb to ask how many keys. I know. Learned now :P

  14. The hydraulophone shown here has a slightly more than 3+1/2 octave range easily accessed by any player. It has 45 finger holes. A skilled hydraulist can sometimes extend out to a 4+1/2 or 5+1/2 octave range.

    hydraulistAugust 29, 2010 @ 1:59 pm
  15. any in northern cali? this is pretty cool. how many octaves can you get with this? how many keys?

    TuMira85August 29, 2010 @ 2:01 pm
  16. If you happen to know the right people to talk to about getting one (parks staff decision makers, etc.), let us know, and we’ll send them some background information, etc.. A good place to put one would be Washington Square Park in New York, where people frolic in the fountain. Got kicked out of Bryant Park by security for playing in that fountain, but Washington Square fountain is really for fun and frolic.

    hydraulistAugust 29, 2010 @ 2:36 pm
  17. Bravo! Sure would love one here in New York.

  18. The standard 12-jet hydraulophones are available from FUNtain (dot) ca

The larger installations are usually custom-made on a consultation basis.

  19. are they avalable for commercial use or is it just in muesems and stuff like that

    boreddude73August 29, 2010 @ 4:48 pm
  20. It depends on the size of the opening, curvature, and various other effects; it can be neutral when not played, or it can draw vacuum when not played, or it can always be sounding even when not played. Typical design preference is to have sound always produced, although slightly, even when jet not obstructed.

    hydraulistAugust 29, 2010 @ 4:55 pm
  21. So what’s the science then? Sounds similar to a reed organ, so is there a venturi effect going on somewhere?

  25. Various locations; the biggest one is at 770 Don Mills Road, out in front of the Ontario Science Centre (it’s the main architectural landmark out in front), and it runs 24 hours a day, and yes, anyone can go and play on it (I think it’s also the only aquatic play facility in the Toronto area that’s open 24 hours a day).

  42. Ha Max…
One may hold a bow in many different ways — it is only the classical world that dictates it be held a certain way. Holding the bow “short” makes it much easier for many to play the fast bow-changes called for in old-time music.
    Best wishes

    dhavlenaAugust 30, 2010 @ 3:01 am
  43. I liked that fiddle most!
..and did you make the guitar yourself?
