The noble town of Mdina served as Malta’s ancient capital from Roman times until the arrival of the Knights of St.John in Malta in 1530. It derives its name from the Arab period (870 – 1224). Its architecture reflects especially the Baroque period. The small town has a population of around 300. The most conspicuous buildings are the numerous palaces, churches and museums. The door knockers of the silent city of Mdina are just an additional attraction .
