Toms Hardware: CPU Cooling

What really happens when you run a CPU without a heatsink. Not like that fake when the CPU exploded.

An overclock to 5Ghz at a time when such a goal was unimaginable, Tom’s Hardware produced this clip and ever since its factualness has been much debated. They apparently use a Pentium 4 with ASUS P4C800-E, MSI GeForce FX5950 Ultra, Corsair DDR550 Pro, Liquid Nitrogen for the CPU and an Asetek Vapochill for the Northbridge. But whether or not it actually ever happened it still is a cool movie well worth watching!

  1. @Shintsu2 The P4 was a stupidly hot chip for it’s day. Also back then amd did have the performance crown.

  2. lol, AMDs run hot anyway – back when I had my P4 I always laughed at AMD boys trying to talk about how great their chip was. Jeez, they just meltdown in no time. I remember I had a friend who had an AMD back in the early 2000′s and he hated it because it would overheat and make his machine crash all the time even though he gave it as much air as he could. Intel for life, I had a PII in my first PC, then a PIII, P4, now I have a C2D and my next will be a Core i7. Love Intel!

  3. @CmdrTobs ah. I must admit that I was upset a bit when (I think this was what happened) AMD announced they were dropping ATI. AMD IS rubbish, but I suppose ATI isn’t too bad. Shame :(

  5. @tcmsrocks Its the other way round for GPU’s Geforce are cheap ‘muscle cars’ and ATI offered quality.

    CmdrTobsSeptember 17, 2010 @ 2:14 am
  6. Hahaha, AMD fail. I hate AMD and hate ATI graphics cards (duh, is there a link? Yes). Evil and cheap. Intel will always be the best, along with Asus mother boards. Melty melty…

  7. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO, THIS WAS FIXED AROUND 7 YEARS AGO, ALSO JUST SOME INTEL FANBOY SHIT….

    YourJustAPawnSeptember 17, 2010 @ 2:54 am
  8. @mastax1234 Yes.

  9. OMFG PENTIUM 4?!?

    ToasticussSeptember 17, 2010 @ 3:52 am
  10. Everyone keeps saying AMD melted because of the dumbest reasons if I remember correctly that was back in the good ol days before CPU throttling. So when they got hot there was no Rev limiter I guess you could call it to protect the chip. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. Pretty cool how fast the CPU cools down after the heat sink is put back on.

  11. my gpu is always at 50 celcius and cpu is at 45, should i be worried?

    mastax1234September 17, 2010 @ 4:59 am
  12. I love the smell of burnt thermalpaste in the morning.

  13. rofl u can cook a pizza on the amd athlond 1400

  15. AMD did not survived because they are powerful. I am on AMB about 7 years and never changed the CPU. Just do not play with heatsinks and it will be ok!

  16. @Ne1170 you get what you pay for, i’d rather have solid processors than broken AMD’s. i’ve had 4 broken amds and zero broken intels. i now run an intel quad extreme QX9650

    blackstones83September 17, 2010 @ 7:23 am
  17. @blackstones83 AMD is more affordable than Intel!!! It’s so much cheaper. I run Intel but if i bought a AMD compatible motherboard for sub £50 it could house over 130 differrent types of processor.

  18. This is awesome. I’ll have to share this to folks who don’t understand the concept of heat sinks.

    Search4TruthRealitySeptember 17, 2010 @ 8:22 am
  19. lmao cool but old

  20. assembled in Malaysia lol!

  21. Looks like TH encoded this video with the CPU heatsink off.

    On AMD – yes

  23. @blackstones83
You dont give any valid reasons why AMD is shit. What is that you where missing on, tell me?
I owned Pent2 Pent3 Pent4 Pent4HT Ath3200 x2Ath4600 Q6600 E6400 and laptop T6600 All the AMD CPUs did theyre job just as good as Intel. They all ran with no problems, they all where ok with overclocking, even Pent2
There is no reason to stick with only one of the companies, because all that matters at the end of the day is price/performance.

  24. @RoLeRzzz AMD is still shit dood. Take it from a former AMD fanboy. I fan’d AMD from 1998 to 2005, got my first pentium 4 socket 775. Thats when i found out what i was missing out on.

    blackstones83September 17, 2010 @ 12:06 pm
  25. @blackstones83 Well…. that is what i said.
btw. Calling a company shit, just because it does not have the strongest CPU on the market is not wise. AMDs processors get the job done and has the most reasonable graphics adapter. (Nvidia thermi is a joke, cause of the insane power requirements with minimal processing power advantage)
It is like calling Intel a shit company, because they don’t have the strongest graphics processor units.

  26. Yes.

  27. uhmmmm….

  28. I have a 3.4 and it struggles to get 3.8 or even 4…

    AaronNicoliSeptember 17, 2010 @ 2:02 pm
  29. Probably will never get 10Ghz, we are looking more at a multi-core future.

    AaronNicoliSeptember 17, 2010 @ 2:18 pm
  30. Sure does, my server room often hits 40+ deg C, when I forget to leave the cooling on :)

    AaronNicoliSeptember 17, 2010 @ 2:57 pm
  32. Was that thermal paste enough on cpu to transfer the heat from cpu to heatsink?.

    wildeyed82September 17, 2010 @ 3:49 pm
  33. hahaha you have no idea what you are talking about.

also take your “liquid oxygen” and replace it with Liquid Nitrogen next time.

    reed2slcSeptember 17, 2010 @ 4:07 pm
  34. White compound for that??
I would demend the compound to be at least 50% pure silver.

    erictech603September 17, 2010 @ 5:50 pm
  38. You’re not supposed to spill the liquid oxygen onto the processor..

    Stevenup7004September 17, 2010 @ 6:28 pm
  39. wow nice work there. hmm…i think it would be possible for me to overclock my processor to 5Ghz, because mines 3.2Ghz (Pentium 4). nice job but. 5/5

    darkmaster010September 17, 2010 @ 6:47 pm
  40. loool in a couple of years they will be useing cpus with 10ghz and normal fans and you guy shave to hook it up to a fridge to get 5ghz :D

    kalasnikov47September 17, 2010 @ 6:57 pm
  41. Sure you did. What, do you live in the arctic circle? Ambient temp does make a big difference with air cooling.

    mygafferSeptember 17, 2010 @ 7:32 pm
  42. Why should Tom’s lie?

    mygafferSeptember 17, 2010 @ 7:50 pm
  43. Retard…

    AaronNicoliSeptember 17, 2010 @ 8:17 pm
  44. Not unless you could keep a continuous supply of liquid N2 handy as it would continuously evaporate at room temperature.

    darkfall13September 17, 2010 @ 9:01 pm
  45. thats semiconducting at its best.
im mad becuz my last computer i tried that on died because it was so cold the processor cracked in half! never ever ever ever EVER!!! use liquid oxygen.
